**ALOUD: A Celebration For Young Readers

ALOUD: a Celebration for Young Readers returns to Harbourfront for its third installment. Each event in this festival of boisterous bookishness gives students a rare opportunity to hear authors read from their works and interact with authors through question and answer sessions and book signings. Past Canadian and international guests have included Deborah Ellis, Marie-Louise Gay and David Homel, Susan Juby, Dennis Lee, Katarina Mazetti, Evan Solomon, Mélanie Watt and Tim Wynne-Jones. This year’s line-up promises to be stellar!

The Forest of Reading® is a series of Ontario-wide children’s choice award programs run in schools, public libraries, and homes. Included in the Forest awards are: the Blue Spruce Award® (Kindergarten–Grade 2); the Silver Birch Express Award® (Grade 3–4); the Silver Birch Award® (Grades 4–6); the Red Maple Award® (Grades 7–8); and the White Pine Award® (Grades 9–12).
In 2008, The Forest of Reading® Festival of Trees plants itself at Harbourfront Centre for the second year running. In 2007 we welcomed more than 60 authors and 4,000 students to the Harbourfront Centre site for an action-packed day of readings, award ceremonies, workshops and activities. International Readings is pleased to partner with the Ontario Library Association (OLA) to present this exciting day-long festival.

FOCUS: Generations
A generation can refer to a time or a class of people, the time you are born to the time of a parents death. It can also refer to an era of style, culture and political movement. At Harbourfront Centre’s Galleries, curators and artists have responded to the theme of Generations. Then, in our studios, students uncover what this theme means to them-their family, their culture, their experience of living in Toronto-through a creative arts workshop with our educators.

FOCUS: Sacred
Some believe that sacred refers to that which is religious or spiritual. Others define the word as something that is held with reverence and importance in life. Through a gallery tour, students will explore how artists have responded to the theme of Sacred. Then, in our studios, students will uncover what this theme means to them – their family, their culture, and their experience of living in Toronto – through a creative arts workshop with our educators.

Students discover why artists today are inspired by the outdoors. Investigate a range of landscape based works, contemporary and historical, while discussing the importance of the power of place and the purpose of making art.
• Engage in outdoor sketching activities inspired by Lake Ontario and the waterfront community outside our studio windows
• Learn a range of landscape painting techniques: discover colour and its application, the importance of tonal values in a work, and elements and principals of design

Learn about the methods of manipulation in print commercials and discuss examples. Learn the methods of digital film and make a commercial about advertising.
• See examples of print commercials and learn about advertising techniques.
• Discuss the proliferation of advertising in society and critique its role.
• Learn the digital technology to make a print advertisement.
• Plan out and execute print advertisement which speaks about advertising techniques.
Time permitting the trip will include a viewing and class critique of an interactive floor advertisement in the lobby.

Discover the connections between advertising, digital film making, and methods of manipulation.
• Discuss and understand the methods of advertising manipulation
• Learn the technology of digital film making
• Create a 30 second “info-tisement”, that informs people about the methods of manipulation in advertising
• Take home a film that can be burned as a DVD and uploaded onto the Internet
Includes a pre-visit by one of our new media educators to prepare for the visit to the Harbourfront Centre.

Behind The Curtain: COBA Collective of Black Artists

COBA SPARKS BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION!
COBA's mission is to preserve and promote the finest traditions of African, Caribbean, and contemporary dance and music through research, education, and public performance. This year at Harbourfront Centre COBA presents Danse Belé (Caribbean Indigenous Folk): 1995 a Dance Theatre production with traditional drums and Chants created by COBA’s Cheorographer BaKari E. Lindsay. Danse Belé is a theatrical representation of the history of Caribbean with Indigenous Folk dances from Trinidad and Tobago. The performance weaves dance, spoken word, music, drumming, chants and period costumes to transport the audience through the life and times of plantation slaves.
Programme includes a matinee performance, Roots and Rhythms workshop with COBA dancers and a specially designed Schools Visits workshop. Get inspired as you explore rhythms, dance and song rooted in African history! For more information, visit www.cobainc.com.

The stories in this exhibition presented by the work of Ingrid Bachmann (installation), Richard Fung (video), Joel Robson (wood) and Diane Nashr O'Young (ceramic) are both personal and universal. Friends and families appear as well as their surrounding world, both real and imaginary. Underneath the surface of each storyline is a testimony of how each artist will face the fast and shifting currents of this Earth we call home. This unique day will include a guided tour of the show and a responsive studio project with our educators.
