During YoungIFOA, Canadian and international writers for young people share their work with school groups as part of the world-renowned International Festival of Authors (IFOA). oungIFOA affords students unparalleled access to authors, to hear them read from their works, to ask questions, and to have their books signed! Past authors have included André Alexis (Canada), Pierre Berton (Canada), Anita Desai (India), Jonathan Safran Foer (USA), Dennis Lee (Canada), Penelope Lively (UK), Tim Wynne-Jones (Canada) and Ting-xing Ye (China/Canada). **ALOUD: A Celebration For Young Readers
Literary and Book Arts
ALOUD: a Celebration for Young Readers returns to Harbourfront for its third installment. Each event in this festival of boisterous bookishness gives students a rare opportunity to hear authors read from their works and interact with authors through question and answer sessions and book signings. Past Canadian and international guests have included Deborah Ellis, Marie-Louise Gay and David Homel, Susan Juby, Dennis Lee, Katarina Mazetti, Evan Solomon, Mélanie Watt and Tim Wynne-Jones. This year’s line-up promises to be stellar!

Clay Building Beasts
Exploring Contemporary Art
Welcome to the exciting world of sculptural beasts! More then just scary creatures that haunt our dreams, these silent critters have been known to protect our homes, offices, cathedrals, temples and sacred spaces all over the world. Students will learn about gargoyles, chimeras, sphinxes and grotesques from a variety cultures.
• Learn about sculpture and discuss how it is used in architecture
• Explore form, pattern and texture, articulating techniques of 3-D form
• Learn and use terminology and vocabulary specific to working with clay, and discuss the physical properties of clay
• Create a ceramics piece inspired by the building beasts history, from the design to the execution, employing hand building techniques and textural decorative methods

• Discuss the physical properties and many uses of clay

Calling all young puppeteers! Discover the history of rod puppets and puppet-making from around the world. Create a one-of-a-kind two faced Rod-Puppet using wooden spoons and a variety of materials like wool, buttons, feathers, and patterned fabrics.
• Students use their imagination to create facial expressions and personality in their puppet through a variety of materials
• Participate in puppetry activities involving movement, expression and sound, with their new puppet
• Use techniques of collage in creating their unique puppet
• Learn to use terminology and vocabulary specific to working with rod puppets
• Learn and practice six levels ESL skills throughout the programme

In this programme students will learn the history of the painted face in hunting, ritual and celebration, finding inspiration in a myriad of world cultures and traditions. Using pattern, students will create their own self-portrait inspired by their own unique visual language.
• Experiment with a variety of painting techniques
• Learn to develop symbols and shapes to express individuality
• Discuss grade appropriate colour theory concepts and terminology
• Use a variety of mediums within on piece (markers, paint, pastel)
• Learn to use terminology and vocabulary specific to working with paint
• Learn and practice six levels English language skills throughout the programme

Education Afloat: On Water
Education Afloat
Anchors away! Students experience Toronto’s waterfront on an hour-long expedition through the Inner Harbour and island lagoons aboard a fully-enclosed, Coast Guard-approved vessel. Life jacket drill is conducted prior to departure. Teachers may choose from a variety of grade appropriate activities to complement the boat exploration. Primary and junior students focus on one of the following topics: Community (Grades 1 – 3) or Environment (grades 2 – 4). Intermediate and senior students study changing land usage and the natural and human impact on the waterfront environment. Call to discuss your options.

Learn about Lake Ontario fish species! Explore how and where they live and the challenges they face in their environment, and create a habitat in which native fish species can thrive!
• Create a multimedia fish habitat collage, building an ideal healthy living environment for a fish
• Explore the harbour area and learn about the fish that live in the lake, and the stresses that they encounter in their environment
• Visit the Spadina wetlands and a pike spawning area and learn why wetlands are important to the health and survival of our fishy friends (full day programme only)

StoryTelling Miss Lou's Room

Harbourfront Centre’s Large Studio “The Lookout” is now an interactive learning space renamed Miss Lou’s Room. It is a tribute to the famous Miss Lou affectionately called “Jamaica’s Folklore Ambassador”. Miss Lou was an educator, an actress, a dramatist, a storyteller, a poet and broadcaster. In this programme children will explore the museum, hear Miss Lou’s famous children's stories and learn the art of interactive engaged bookmaking.
• Explore the interactive museum, and learn the history of Miss Lou
• Hear Miss Lou's famous children's stories and participate in a story performed by our School Visits Educator
• Participate in circle games designed by Miss Lou that explore; rhythm, poetry, and spoken word
• Create an interactive engaged hand-made accordion book inspired by the Miss Lou legacy
